A live audience is always welcome and there are plenty of seats. You can meet the guests in person and learn more about their projects or even get involved yourself.

Women’s Employment and Resource Center’s

Awards Celebration

Since 1988, WERC has provided quality workforce development services to more than 7,000 women from Capital District, who have lost their source of income upon the death, divorce, separation, disability, or dislocation of a spouse, or who are single mothers, or left the workforce to take care of an elderly parent.

Annually, WERC provides over 2,700 free services to women who need to return to the workforce giving them the resources, computer and career skills training, and the confidence needed to find employment in today’s competitive job market.

At the 2017 Annual Awards luncheon Celebration, the Capital District Women’s Employment & Resource Center (WERC) will honor these community leaders who have made important contributions to the personal and professional growth of women, as well as to the region’s economic vitality.

This year’s awardees include: Kathleen McLean, CEO, The McLean Group, who will receive the Harriet Rifkin Leadership Award; Jade Gibson, Founder & Owner, Jade’s Hair Envy Salon, who will be awarded the WERCing Woman of Achievement Award; and Susan Taylor, Manager, Great Finds Thrift Boutique, who will be recognized with the Advancement of Women in the WERCplace Award. This is the 13th year that WERC has hosted this uplifting event. KeyBank is the title sponsor of the event. Benita Zahn, WNYT Anchor & Health Report will emcee the event. Sand Lake Historical Society’s “Who Killed Hazel Drew?”

Drew was murdered and found on Teal Pond, Sand Lake in 1908 and remains an unsolved mystery. In 1908 the murder made national news.  Today Twin Peaks fans from all over have called, Britain’s Daily Mail ran an article, the latest article has been in the NY Time.  The TV series “Twin Peaks” was based on this incident. The Town of Sand Lake Historian, Bob Moore, is the point person for the project. The project has resulted in tee shirts, a play, a film, two books and a new Twin Peaks series (Mark Frost, screenwriter).  John Holser is a local filmmaker who is in the process of making a documentary and has a three minute preview available. – Our October meeting honors the Suffragettes Anniversary and in November the Erie Canal Anniversary

Schuyler Mansion & Crailo State Historic Sites

• Heidi Hill, Site Manger

Harvest Faire is held as a tribute to the 17 and 18^th century market faires held at Crailo.  Music, 18^th c. reenactors and craft demonstrators, 18^th century cooking demonstrations, Native American and Dutch interpreters, free ice cream, games and pumpkin painting are a few of the many amenities offered at this annual event.

Schuyler Mansion also has a September event.  Thursday evening, Sept. 21 from 5:30 – 7pm.  Phil Lord, former NYS Museum employee will discuss his research into the surveying, planning and development of the Western Inland Navigation Canal Company, the forerunner of the Erie Canal, headed by Philip J. Schuyler in the 1790s.

• Mission: Crailo: The Museum of the Colonial Dutch in the Hudson River Valley. Exhibits housed within a 1707 van Rensselaer. Schuyler Mansion shares the history of the home of Major General Philip J. Schuyler & Catharine van Rensselaer Schuyler. Architecture, 18^th century political & military history, daily 18^th century life, tenant farm system, trade economy, early canal endeavors and developing a new nation.

Annual Carrot Festival

This annual fall tradition features:  delicious food, fun activities for children, vendors galore, a community service tent, a farmer’s market with locally grown produce, a “cool” car show, a pet adoption clinic, and of course carrot cake!  Music and entertainment will be scheduled throughout the day.

The Upper Union St. 5 K Run

From their website: The run will start behind the Trustco bank at 1620 Union St. Registration begins at 7 AM with race at 8:30 AM. The course goes through and around Central Park and is USATF sanctioned. Registration is $25 prior and $30 day of event.

A Look at The ADDY at Proctors

            Janice will be discussing the third floor of the former Carl Co, now being developed as “The Addy”, a small 100 person theater, rehearsal spaces and meeting rooms for the Empire State Youth Orchestra as well as other art groups.
