Radio Drama – Minutiae Performance and Taping
Radio Drama Returns!
Guests: Jay Towne, Playwright, Cheryl Charbonneau, Actor and Kyle Jenks, Actor
Performance and taping of episodes 1 & 2 of Minutiae, a serial radio drama based and recorded in Amsterdam, NY.
Cast and staff of 17, young and old, are a mix of amateurs and professionals from around the Mohawk Valley and Capitol Region. Original story.
Minutiae, as envisioned, is a serial radio drama depicting a multi-racial family growing up in Amsterdam, NY. It is to be a family saga, told over the course of years, with approximately 5 episodes per year, produced and recorded in Amsterdam, for an intended radio broadcast.
In the first act the family faces the death of their only son, and as a way of coping decide to honor him by keeping his memory alive through reading from his diary. The story is told using the techniques of flashbacks and memories and the device of reading short fiction from Jason’s diary as a means of expressing his point of view.
The characters are varied, ranging from Jackson, an African-American salesman father; Miriam, Caucasian, former nun, mother of two; Margaret, a mixed race daughter, divorcee, adulteress and mother of one daughter of her own; Jason, a mixed race son who confines himself to his room for almost three years while he battles a pernicious mental illness, and Rachel, a Jewish librarian/caretaker to Jason who takes care of and is secretly in love with him.
Other characters range from a police detective, a carpenter, librarian, extended family and more, all representing an aspect of Amsterdam’s culture and sub-culture. The drama also incorporates the intended discussion of certain religious or spiritual themes that each character either holds or doesn’t hold, as a way of addressing the human condition through examination of each characters coping mechanisms.
I hope to examine various belief systems, or lack thereof, to show how each character relates to him/herself and others and their surroundings.
