This is a time when magic organizations round the world work to increase awareness of magic as a performing art.
The International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) was founded February 10th 1922, in Winnipeg, Canada, by Len Vintus (first president), Gene Gordon and Don Rogers. Unlike earlier magic clubs, such as the Society of American Magicians in the USA and The Magic Circle in England, the IBM was begun by magicians living outside the major cities, who were unable to attend magic club meetings, and who kept in contact by mail. To do this the organization began, in 1922, to publish its magazine, The Linking Ring.
We encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about magic or the International Brotherhood of Magicians to attend one our meetings. Our meetings are held at 7:30 on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the SW Pitts Hose Company, 226 Old Loudon Road in Latham. At these meetings members are encouraged to perform before the club, but are not pressured into doing so. Meetings are an opportunity learn and discuss magic with other men and women who share this interest.
The Society of American Magicians (SAM) is the oldest magic organization in the world. It was founded on May 10, 1902 by thirteen men at Martinka’s magic shop in New York City. Before this meeting, magicians did not usually associate with one another. They carefully guarded their secrets and were fearful that other magicians would steel their ideas.
The purpose of the society was “to advance, elevate, and preserve magic as a performing art, to promote harmonious fellowship throughout the world of magic, and to maintain and improve ethical standards in the field of magic.” The code of ethics was twofold: first, it discouraged pilfering another magician’s tricks and secondly, it discouraged exposing magical secrets to the general public.
We encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about magic or Society of American Magicians to attend our meetings. No previous experience is needed, just a willingness to meet new people and learn about a subject we are all passionate about.
Our regular meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the S.W. Pitts Hose Company, 226 Old Loudon Road in Latham. We start at 7:30 pm. During the meetings, magic is performed, discussed and taught. In addition to our regular meetings we schedule an annual banquet, a picnic and lectures by visiting professional magicians.
When people think of magic, the name “Houdini” usually comes to mind. Without a doubt, Harry Houdini was one of the greatest showmen of his time. He was an escape artist, a magician, and an illusionist. He was also a movie actor and stunt man.
He began by performing in dime museums and sideshows. At first he and his brother, Theodore, performed together as “The Houdini Brothers.” In 1894, Harry met and married Wilhelmina Beatrice “Bess” Rahnein, and his wife soon replaced his brother in the act, and they then billed themselves as “The Houdinis”. For the rest of Houdini’s performing career, Bess worked as his stage assistant.
In the summer of 1927, less than one year after his death a “Houdini Day” was established. In 1938, Les Sholty, a Chicago member of the Society of American Magicians, sought to have “Houdini Day” officially sanctioned. Eventually, October 31 was selected as National Magic Day in honor of Harry Houdini and marking the date of his death. This has been expanded to a National Magic week which runs from October 23 to the 31and the entire month of October is sometimes referred to as National Magic Month. This is a time for magicians to raise awareness of magic as a performing art by performing benefit shows for groups. And appearing on talk shows such as this.
