Segment TWO
Deeper than the Skin at the Eighth Step
Reggie Harris, Performer & Margie Rosenkranz, Artistic Director
From their Website:
Long-time friends Greg Greenway and Reggie Harris – both singer-songwriters and familiar performers on our stage, team up for “Deeper Than the Skin,” an electrifying and poignant musical exploration of their unique histories as a White man from the capital of the Confederacy and a Black man whose maternal ancestor was a slave on a plantation just outside of Richmond, Va. Together, they’ve built a bridge between their lives through 30 years of friendship, shared goals and a passion to build community.
“‘Deeper Than the Skin’ is an absolutely amazing experience,” says Selma Civil Rights activist Rev. Gordon Gibson, author of Southern Witness, Knoxville, Tenn., in a review of the production.
“Greenway is one of those artists who is so rich a talent that it is difficult to categorize him. He traverses, combines and mixes up musical genres and manages to open a window on global events that bring us together as citizens of the world. Like other great performers before him, Greenway’s message is that we can all play a part and make a difference in the course of both our private and public lives. But few musicians can do just this with such style, passion and sheer musicality.”
A songwriter of great depth and insight, Reggie Harris writes from a personal but accessible place that reveals his deep sense of humanity and a uniquely positive world view. A musical trailblazer, he performs for audiences of all ages. Harris is a teaching artist for the John F Kennedy Center’s CETA program, a Woodrow Wilson Scholar and the director of music education for the UU Living Legacy Project. A master song leader, he deeply values the power of song and the dignity of every human being. Reggie’s effervescently humor and hopeful presence have led fans to tag him ‘Ambassador of Joy, Hope, and Freedom.’

Willie Deane, III was born and raised in Schenectady New York. He is a graduate of Schenectady High School’s Technical Program and holder of a High School Regents Diploma. He was the Captain and leader of the first New York State Section II Championship Basketball team 1998, since the merger of rivals Mont Pleasant and Linton High Schools. Willie still holds the school’s all-time scoring title surpassing the legendary Pat Riley who previously held this record. Willie was selected the Times Union Player of the Year and was coached by Schenectady’s City School District (SCSD) Athletic Hall of Famer, Coach Gary DiNola. Upon graduating from Schenectady High, Deane made his trek to his next academic level.
First, Willie attended Boston College and later transferred to Purdue University where he joined his family after GE transferred his father to Indiana. Before finishing his stint at Purdue with a Bachelors of Arts in English and a minor in Mathematics, Willie was the Big Ten Conference leading scorer as a junior; All Big Ten First Team selection as a senior; Co-Scoring Title holder as a senior; and John Wooden Team MVP Award winner. Willie held this MVP Title for two consecutive years, as a junior and senior, which was a Boilermaker achievement previously held only by the legendary Glen “Big Dog” Robinson, and both players achieved this under legendary College Hall of Famer, Coach Gene Keady. Willie also entered Purdue’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019 by being selected one of the top 50 Legends to ever play basketball at Purdue. After graduating from Purdue, Willie began his professional basketball career.
Willie started his professional career in Basketball in Europe, but made a short stint in the NBA with the Washington Wizards in 2007. During his 15 year professional basketball career and while in College, Willie lived, experienced and/or played in 15 different countries (Greece, Turkey, Russia, Bulgaria, NBA USA, Lithuania, Poland, France, Italy, Ukraine, Spain, Latvia, Japan, China, and played a summer in Australia under the legendary College Hall of Famer Coach Mike Dean). His longest tenure (4 years) was in Russia where he achieved language fluency when living in Vladivostok. Willie was also able to extend his High School Spanish competencies while in Spain. As a professional basketball player and Point Guard, Willie achieved noted team as well as personal goals. He led his teams to three Bulgarian Championships, where he was named Two-Time Bulgarian Finals MVP. Other team accomplishments included one Bulgarian Cup, one French Championship, one Golmeski Cup, and one Italian Championship. Additionally, Willie holds two Russian Scoring Titles, one Russian Bronze Medal, one Latvian Scoring Title, and a Latvian All Star MVP. Willie ended his basketball career at the end of the 2017-2018, season and returned to his hometown, Schenectady, NY to be with his family full time.
To accent his transition to a post sports career, Willie is currently making appearances as a published author of his first children’s book “LOVE” which was inspired by his two young daughters Sue Han and Seline. While Willie was inducted into the Capital District basketball hall of fame in 2006, he will be inducted into the SCSD Athletic Hall of Fame this September in 2019. While Willie has a full schedule parenting, pursuing his next career, promoting his book, continuing his Masters in Business Management Leadership and Innovation at Purdue University; he hasn’t forgotten his community.
Willie has made a global impact by giving to the less fortunate communities wherever he lived. In Schenectady he has served as the Schenectady Y’s Director of their Evening Program in Jerry Burrell Park for at risk kids since 2006.
