The Rotary Club of Schenectady is currently celebrating their centennial anniversary, the club is a chapter of Rotary International and is composed of over 80 community leaders representing a diverse cross-section of professions who dedicate countless hours of service to improve the quality of human life both locally and globally. Specifically, they engage in countless volunteer projects that benefit our community including the clean-up of Schenectady’s Vale Park and a section of the Interstate 890 highway system, over 50 hours of bell ringing annually in support of the Salvation Army’s many programs, distribution of meals to impoverished children through the Schenectady Community Ministries’ summer lunch program and the more recent creation of the “Journey to Success” program at the Steinmetz Career and Leadership Academy which provides mentorship and professional clothing for students preparing for post-secondary life.

In addition, the Rotary Club of Schenectady provides international support through participation in Rotary International’s campaign to eradicate polio and, for close to 20 years, has conducted a water filtration project in Haiti that provides access to clean water for hundreds of impoverished people. Finally, the club and its 501 (c) 3 Rotary Club of Schenectady Foundation, Inc. awards thousands of dollars in grants annually to local nonprofit organizations in support of their respective missions and provides scholarship assistance to graduating Schenectady High School seniors, Schenectady County Community College, and Union College students.

Anastasia Garceau, Museum Director

The museum recently concluded its educational program, Canalways, for fourth graders learning about the local history of the canals. This year we had a total of 445 students from 8 schools from 6 school districts. It’s a hand-on learning environment outside at Lock 2, the Old Champlain Canal trail, the Waterford Harbor Visitors Center and included a ride or a tour of the Grand Erie Barge. The museum partners with the NYS Canal Corporation, the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, the Town of Waterford, the Waterford Canal and Towpath Society and our volunteers who help make this possible for students to enjoy! Our Dashin’ & Dancin’ concert will be repeated Dec. 1, featuring the Refrigerators.

The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center is open for its 54th season and invites visitors to the current exhibit, “Water & War: Waterford’s Routes and Canals Through Conflict”. This exhibit explores the military history of the area and its connection to WWI and the opening of the Barge Canal as both mark their centennial anniversary. Two rooms are dedicated to this exhibit, as well as the museum’s permanent exhibit, “Born of Two Rivers”, a special audio tour courtesy of UniGuide Audio Tour App, and a new children’s area is also available for visitors to enjoy.
