The Joy of the Journey
- Jeff Vredenburg, Conductor, Mendelssohn Club
- Colleen Pratt, Guest Artist
Most of this concert’s numbers deal with travel, and most of those with returning home. At least one of these journeys isn’t joyful, while another looks forward to another, better life. No doubt you’re enjoyed a journey or two, the goings and comings, and great varieties of travel with song.
Re: Colleen Pratt: The product of a musical family, Colleen is the daughter of musicians Helen and Norman Pratt and the niece of well-known jazz man Bobby Pratt. Colleen often devotes her full, rich vocals to the swing and jazz idioms, but also enjoys singing contemporary ballads, pop and Motown.
Colleen performs with several area bands along with her own group, “Colleen Pratt & Friends”, a dynamic four-piece band comprised of Jazz pianist John Nazarenko, bassist Tom Crudo, bassist/guitarist/vocalist Bobbie Van Detta, drummer Bob Halek and saxophonist Cliff Lyons.

Freihofer’s continues to set the pace by sponsoring the annual Freihofer’s Run for Women 5K. Now in its 40th year, the event is home to the current masters 5K World Record of 15:48 set in 2004 by Colleen DeReuck and features thousands of women from recreational joggers to Olympians who challenge themselves on the picturesque 3.1-mile course. Training Challenge: Freihofer’s co-director Patrick Lynskey found that women needed something else before the race to help jump-start their training and to supplement it. Since starting the program, they’ve expanded and now have intermediate training sessions for those who ran in previous years and are looking for more of a challenge, as well as an advanced group for those who regularly run five miles or more.

125th Anniversary! Brown School
- Patti Vitale, Head of School
- Elizabeth Vitale, Administrative Assistant
Brown School, a nursery through grade 10 independent school, is celebrating 125 years in the Capital Region community. The school, located in Schenectady, opened its doors in 1893 with only 12 students. It was originally located in Helen “Nellie” Brown’s own home at 237 Liberty Street in downtown Schenectady, with two rooms serving as classrooms. Offered as an alternative to public schools, Brown School supported small class sizes and an individualized approach to learning that would foster self-confidence, intellectual curiosity, and a life-long love of learning. These values remain today.
“It is important to honor our accomplishments and bring together all facets of the community. We are excited about the future and playing a prominent role in the community,” said Vitale.
- Organization: Brown School
- Mission: To inspire each student to love learning while striving for academic excellence.
