The Living Room – A Mental Health Partnership

• Organization: The Living Room – Crisis Diversion Program
• Mission: The Living Room is a partnership between Ellis Medicine, Rehabilitation Support Services, and funded by the Alliance for Better Health. The Living Room serves as an alternative to Emergency Departments for individuals with mental health crises. Located in the Ellis Mental Health Clinic at 1023 State St, in Schenectady, The Living Room was designed to resemble a setting in a home with comfortable furnishings and therapeutic activities to provide a safe environment to reduce stress and facilitate recovery. Based on a national best practice model, and unique to the Capital Region, the Living Room is open from 12pm-8pm, aligned with the timing of high Emergency Department utilizations by individuals experiencing acute mental health crises.

Segment TWO

The Dudley Observatory

               SPRING STAR PARTY: Join the Dudley Observatory at miSci for an evening of stargazing! Our Rising Star Interns will gather around the observatory and have telescopes out for public star gazing. See Mars, the Orion Nebula, star clusters, and more! 7:45 – 8:15 planetarium show
8 – 10 pm Stargazing with the Rising Star Interns Great for scout troops and families! Come and explore miSci’s exhibits and partake of the “Given to Fry” food truck’s fare.

               “POWEHI” – THE 1^st BLACK HOLE EVER PHOTOGRAPHED: Scientists unveiled the first photo of a black hole Wednesday April 10. The supermassive black hole is at the center of the Messier 87 galaxy, which is 55 million light years away from Earth. The photo was taken using an array of radio satellites around the world working together, captivating viewers and providing the only direct visual evidence that these regions of spacetime exist. That black hole you’ve seen everywhere now has a name — it’s been christened Powehi — a Hawaiian phrase referring to an “embellished dark source of unending creation.” The responsibility of finding it a name fell to Larry Kimura, a Hawaiian language professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, who was approached by astronomers involved with the project. Two of the eight telescopes used to capture the photograph are located in Hawaii.

Segment THREE

Kema’s Kreations!  Fashion Bags and more

The appreciation for her kreations developed her confidence and she applied to Fashion Industries High School to major in fashion design and merchandising.  Her sewing addiction was supported by winning dance contests, always wearing a Kema original to showcase the finesse used to command the stage. Brooklyn’s Hoyt Street, and Delancey Street in Manhattan, were more than happy to share in her success. Disenchanted by an industry that didn’t support the beauty of curvaceous women, Kema decided to design and create captivating pieces which accentuate the body in all its marvelousness.  Kema’s Kreations hemms society’s definition of beauty by entertaining the senses with visual statements of amazement and mends the soul of its people by giving them original kraftmanship to celebrate their unique beauty.

Segment FOUR

Black Diamond Group Performance Ensemble

            Example of what we do depends on the theme: currently the tribute to Aretha Franklin is hot:

See clip of “Oh Mary Don’t You Weep” poem with dancer – (Oh Mary Don’t You Weep song by Aretha Franklin). Also, wonderful representation of Black Man today is found in the presentation of the Black Man Can You Understand monologue.  More specifically spiritual poem example is Spring Bee – poem.   Regardless of circumstances my work is positive and essentially to encourage “Red Rose in the Rain” (prepared to read part of Aretha tribute poem if you like

            Just wanting to have more folk come and actually see what we do and not even specifically me but the wonderful talent I am able to find in the most unexpected places and times.  My best work of gathering folk so far have been at bus stops or on the bus. We have a treasure trove of gems in our communities that need to be show cased for real. Young and Elders alike are needing and wanting to have a variety of venues to explore their possibilities. I love those actors untrained who get a hold of my poetry and find that with practice YES! They can do this and actually do it well! Many Elders used to perform or have always wanted to and this is a great venue for them!  I might push folks a little but it is only so they show off their best because it is really a beautiful thing when it clicks, when they actually connect to the material and feel what they are saying! A beautiful thing!  I live to see that moment! I like to encourage others because a few folks have encouraged me and it has made all the difference in the world to me.  Donald Hyman is one of those people.  He’s my big brother! There is something special about him, others might say nice things about you but when he says you can do it … you believe it! Kirk Daniels from Albany Cable is also a part of my support team for Black Diamond Group and is a great source for encouragement and invaluable technical support – he makes us look good in video and shows me that even more is possible! Together they both make me think “sure, ok, I can do this”!! Brownie points in heaven for all who encourage a poet!!

Organization: Black Diamond Group Performance Ensemble

Mission: To give a platform for my poetry and for new talent to shine. My poetry is positive and yet does not shy from the uncomfortable.  Issues of poverty, homelessness, family issues, class, sex, race, colorism, and religion are often presented in a clean, straight forward way. This group is a platform for my poetry and the further encouragement of my work and the group’s honest ability.

Cost: Usually my shows are free except for the black history month shows and even then only nominal fees to cover, food, flyers, general work of the season.
