Events at miSci

BRAIN: The World Inside Your Head — Designed to appeal to audiences of all ages, BRAIN employs innovative special effects, 3-D reproductions, virtual reality, hands-on learning activities and interactive technology to delve into the inner workings of the brain, including its processes, potentials and mysteries. Sponsored by Pfizer Inc, BRAIN literally takes you inside the head. Probe the geography of a giant brain. Stand in the midst of the brain’s constant electrical brainstorm as thoughts and sensations are generated. Along the special journey, visitors will discover how the brain learns and thinks. They’ll learn the secrets of sleep and dreams and the dangers, causes and cures of disorders, diseases and mental illnesses. Plus, the exhibit takes visitors into the future of medical and technological exploration of the brain.
Invention Convention — Invention Convention 2018 (IC 2018) is miSci’s annual regional invention competition for students in grades K through 8. Now in its 20th year, Invention Convention has engaged more than 16,000 students from the Capital Region in creative problem solving, including more than 1,000 in 2018!
The Top 100 Finalists have been invited to display their prototypes at miSci for the month of May, and miSci will be hosting an “Invention Convention” especially for the student inventors and their families on May 25.
New format for Invention Convention 2018: At IC 2018, students and their families will be invited to participate in exciting hands-on demonstrations, and hear from professionals in the field during a ceremony at miSci on May 24, 2018. As in the past, students also will be able to view one another’s inventions and will receive gifts commemorating their participation.
International Day of Light — The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrates how science, technology, art and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace.

Catholic Charities Programs

Over 50 community organizations, including Catholic Charities Senior & Caregiver Support Services all under one roof for community members to speak to organization representatives about their needs for volunteers. Community members are educated about the vital needs within Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady counties that range from volunteers for Meals on Wheels, Providing respite and companionship to seniors in Adult Day Programs, tutoring students in schools with reading, providing transportation services to seniors, and keeping seniors active through health & recreation programs.
Seeking volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels, transport individuals to medical appointments or other community appointments; to be advocates in long term care facilities with the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program; to provide health insurance information and counseling; and to provide in-home friendly visits to home bound or otherwise isolated seniors.

Human Rights Annual Awards Breakfast

The Annual Awards Breakfast is part of the Commission’s ongoing effort to foster mutual respect and enhance understanding among all people in Schenectady County and to assist individuals in securing their constitutional rights. Awards will be given in four different categories: youth, individual, community group, and justice award. The winners will be honored at an Awards Breakfast to be held at the Glen Sanders Mansion, Scotia, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018.

Summer Camping with the Girls Scouts
- Mary Buszuwski, CEO of Girl Scouts of Northeastern NY
Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York (GSNENY) Summer Camp (open to all girls, ages 5 -17) is one of the only places where girls can be outside, be creative, and participate in an all-girls community setting. GSNENY is committed to providing opportunities for girls to choose their own outdoor adventure, learn new skills, build self-confidence, and expand their appreciation of the outdoors and the diversity of others.
Day camps (such as Camp Is-Sho-Da, East Greenbush; Camp Meadowbrook, Queensbury; Camp Woodhaven, Galway) are where girls can try new things, challenge themselves and gain confidence as they sing songs, play games, make arts & crafts, and earn badges. Many camps include activities like archery, team building, and waterfront time.
Overnight/resident camps (such as Hidden Lake, near Lake George and Lake Clear Camp, on Lake Clear) offers a wide variety of activities including waterfront time, archery, arts and crafts, hiking, team-building activities, and ropes course elements.
