TEDx – Soul Stories
Cristina James, PhD
Academic Dean, The Benjamin School
Dr. James is also an English Teach at the Benjamin School located in Florida.
The mission is helping students from 4th grade up to find their soul stories, to learn to wield and manipulate language before it can wield and manipulate them, and speak their truth to power on the global TED platform. I implement this curriculum at The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, Florida, but I am also in talks with various schools in the capital district to create a summer camp that would see students organizing their own licensed TEDx event and writing TED talks to present at our event.
TEDxTheBenjaminSchool’s next annual event will be held on April 21st all day and live streamed from Benjamin Hall. The theme this year is SapirWhorf which is the theory that the words that populate a culture’s language naturally influence the experience of the people ensconced in that culture. For instance, if you are part of a culture where women are routinely called “girls” this will affect the way in which women are both perceived and how they perceive themselves.
We anticipate at least 35 of our student speakers to take the stage with adult guest speakers, Columbia Post Doc Fellow and TED Speaker, Dr. Jamila Lysicott, Promoter of Self Determination and Local Entrepreneurship in 3rd world countries Dr. Ernesto Sirolli, Author, Nora Raleigh Baskin, Poet Georgia Heard, Professor Andrew Reiner, Educator Cornelius Minor, and the local Mia Scirocco trio.
For those of you unfamiliar with TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design), it is a non-profit global platform for speakers to present ideas worth spreading. TEDx allows local TED organizers to create licensed, independent TED events in their community or at their school. My program soulstoriesdna.com helps students find their stories and mine them into talks for their TEDx program
- Organization: Soul Stories – The Benjamin School
- Event: TEDx The Benjamin School
- Location of event: Live Streamed from the school’s theater

Wish Jump 2017
Mary Kenney – Event Organizer
Wish Jump 2017 is the seventh annual skydiving fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Northeast New York. Wish Jumpers are local individuals who spend a few months fundraising and then all come together on the last Saturday in July to go skydiving. Funds raised are donated directly to our local Make-A-Wish chapter and are used for granting wishes to wish kids and teens with life-threatening medical conditions and who live in the 518 areas. Since 2011, nearly $200,000 has been raised, and over a dozen wishes granted. This year 25 people from the Capital Region will be skydiving, including the chapter CEO, Bill Trigg III, who has skydived every year since Wish Jump began.
Wish Jump is an “independent” fundraiser for Make-A-Wish NENY, meaning, it is not the Make-A-Wish organization that hosts or organizes the event. I became a volunteer wish granter for the chapter in 2010. After granting my first wish I was so moved by the experience, I decided I wanted to hold a fundraiser, but I wanted to do something a little more exciting than a bake sale. Hence, Wish Jump was born. Wish Jumpers are the participants who raise money and go skydiving. Over the years we have had several Wish Jumpers who were previously wish kids and who beat cancer. We have also had a number of wish parents participate. They see Wish Jump as an exciting way to give back to Make-A-Wish. This year is the 30th anniversary of the local chapter, so our fundraising goal is $30,000. Right now we are at $25,000 with a week and a half to go!
- Organization: Wish Jump (Independent Fundraiser for Make-a-Wish)
- Event: Wish Jump 2017
- Location of event: Skydive the Ranch, New Paltz NY
- Date/Time: Sat. July 29 at noon
- Cost: Fundraising required to participate in skydive.

15-LOVE – Youth Tennis
Amber Marino, Executive Director
We operate throughout the Capital Region, with special emphasis on the inner cities of Albany, Schenectady, Troy and Rensselaer. Since 1990, the program has impacted more than 45,000 youth and their families, including about 4,400 in the last year.
Mission Statement: “To reach out in a loving, caring way to youth of the Capital Region, using tennis as the medium, especially those in the inner cities”
- Within the overall mission, the following seven themes are emphasized:
– To stress education - – To promote good health (both emotional and physical)
- – To instill positive values
- – To foster multi-cultural relationships
- – To encourage good sportsmanship
- – To support family preservation
- – To give back in the community
Schenectady Tennis Association is hosting a Tennis Social that will include refreshments and drinks to benefit 15-LOVE and the improvements at the Central Park Tennis Courts. Everyone is welcome, please contact Beth Dieck at 518-399-4958 to register.
The City of Schenectady and USTA Eastern have joined forces to repair the tennis courts at Central Park. There are some additions to the project that funds are being raised for and donations will go to 15-LOVE (who uses these courts over the summer to provide free tennis lessons to inner-city youth). 15-LOVE is acting as the local conduit between the City and USTA for this project.
15-LOVE is best known for the free tennis lessons we provide around the Region at 13 different parks over the summer, but the program is year-round with in-school and after-school programming as well, and the major focus is on education. We offer literacy programs, a STEM Program, College Prep and Leadership and Healthy Living and Gardening. In addition, every tennis lesson includes an “off-court,” life skills and education component to help engage the students in various ways. Finally, each child receives a free book over the summer to help stave off the summer learning loss, and two Book Giveaway Days are held each year in the fall and spring. Donations of gently used children’s books are always welcome.
