National Astronomy Week (Sept 25 – Oct 1)

            The Dudley Observatory provides education and outreach programs designed to bring the wonders of science, particularly astronomy, to people of all ages. We cultivate interest and understanding of science, science careers and scientists, and help the public appreciate science in an approachable and enjoyable way. Our long-standing commitment to the history of astronomy, and our library and artifact collection, serve as the platforms from which to launch vibrant and expanding educational programs

In the Heat of the Night at Sand lake Ctr. Arts

            On the 50^th Anniversary of the Best Picture winner, Sand Lake Center for the Arts is proud to present Circle Theatre Players stage production of “John Ball’s In the Heat of the Night” adapted by Matt Pelfrey from the Schenectady native John Ball’s 1965 novel. It tells the story of California police detective Virgil Tibbs who while travelling thru Argo, Alabama in 1962 is profiled, arrested and detained for the murder of an activist real estate developer only to commandeer the investigation after we learn he’s a homicide detective and becomes the town’s last best hope against a murderer among them.

The book has inspired many incarnations most famously the 1967 Oscar winning film celebrating its 50th Anniversary which picked up trophies for Best Picture and Best Actor for Rod Steiger as Chief Gillespie (Chris Foster in the CTP production. There was also a long running television series (1988-1995) starring Carrol O’Connor still in syndication. Virgil Tibbs also appears in six subsequent John Ball novels-The Cool Cottontail (1966), Johnny Get Your Gun (1969), Five Pieces of Cake (1972), The Eyes of Buddha (1976), Then Came Violence (1980) and Singapore (1986).

The Circle Theatre Players production has Aileem Penn and Chris Foster heading up a cast of 14 directed by Patrick White in his Sand Lake Center for the Arts debut. The cast features 9 actors making their Sand Lake debut. It is produced by Val Kavanaugh with sets and lights by Barry Striefert, stage management by Mary Margaret Concra and set by Bob and Sharon Dawes. The play will be done on a practically bare stage using only a wall and 3 chairs to create 35 different scenes. Movement assistance by Cori Irwin and fight choreography by Ron Glasser. Barbara Neu did costumes and Anna Church and Karleen Hayden did props and set dressing.

Patrick White in his SLCA-CTP debut is directing a cast of 14 many making their SLCA debuts as well.

Oktoberfest 5K – Albany

            Oktoberfest 5k is an annual race and fun run taking place during Oktoberfest celebrations hosted by Wolff’s Biergarten in Albany.

On Saturday, Sept. 30 at 10:15 am, hundreds of runners from throughout the Capital Region will head to downtown Albany to enjoy the fall weather and participate in the third annual Oktoberfest 5k and fun run.

The event, which is part of the Oktoberfest celebrations hosted by Wolff’s Biergarten, begins at 10:15 am at Broadway and Ferry St, Albany, NY.  A portion of proceeds raised will benefit less fortunate members of our community — the Epilepsy Foundation of NENY, Center for Disability Services, Special Olympics NY and the Ronald MacDonald House.

Lynskey is the COO of Malta-based Green Leaf Racing, which has handles event logistics for numerous regional road races/swim events, including the Hudson River Triathlon, Lake George Open Water Swim and Moreau Lake 15K Trail Run. Besides his work for Green Leaf, Patrick is the operations director for the Troy Turkey Trot and co-director for the Freihofer’s Run for Women, the area’s most prestigious all-women’s 5K road race. In that capacity, he manages all logistical operations, including overseeing all area directors, volunteer recruitment, vendors, and oversees partnerships with city/state agencies, including City of Albany officials and key officials from the Albany Police Department, Homeland Security, New York State Troopers, New York State Office of General Services, and Albany Fire and EMS. His work ensures that the event is safe for participants and runs without a hitch. A longtime runner himself, Patrick is a finisher of The Comrades Marathon, an 89 km ultramarathon, which is run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon race.
