The Mediterranean Diet!
Lester Y. Rosenzweig, MS RD, CDN
Lester will be discussing the Mediterranean style of eating for health as well as choosing foods that are “nutrient dense” versus “empty calories.” I will provide healthy eating tips for the holidays and share a few recipes. He’ll show us how to read food labels.
Since 1918, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schenectady County (CCE-Schenectady) has responded to the needs of local residents with unbiased, research-based information, tools and education that people have come to depend on and trust. Our programs are developed in direct response to community input, and are based on the most current information available from Cornell and other Land Grant universities from across the nation.
The mission of Cooperative Extension is to enable people to improve their lives and communities through partnerships that put experience and research knowledge to work. Extension staff and trained volunteers deliver education programs, conduct applied research, and encourage community collaborations. Our educators connect people with the information they need on topics such as commercial and consumer agriculture; nutrition and health; youth and families; finances; energy efficiency; economic and community development; and sustainable natural resources. Our ability to match university resources with community needs helps us play a vital role in the lives of individuals, families, businesses, and communities throughout Schenectady County.
CCE-Schenectady is a subordinate governmental agency with an educational mission that operates under a form of organization and administration approved by Cornell University as agent for the State of New York. It is tax-exempt under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state. Each Cornell Cooperative Extension association is an independent employer that is governed by an elected Board of Directors with general oversight from Cornell. All associations work to meet the needs of the counties in which they are located as well as state and national goals.

71st Troy Turkey Trot – Thanksgiving Day

Now in its 71st year, the Troy Turkey Trot is the nation’s 12th and world’s 64th oldest road race, as well as the 11th largest Turkey Trot in the nation. The event, which draws as many as 8,000 participants from 37 states and features a 5K, 10K, Grade School Mile and Turkey Walk, is designed to celebrate fitness, families and tradition against a backdrop of some of Troy’s most historic neighborhoods, as well as raise funds for the Regional Food Bank of NENY and Joseph’s House and Shelter.

Concerned for the Hungry – Thanksgiving Project

We collect donated food, and purchased food and bring it all together where it is organized, sorted and packed into “baskets” to be given to the families that have qualified to receive one. Most are picked up by the families; some are delivered by agencies on their behalf and some are delivered to the disabled or homebound. Nothing is wasted. Food not used in the baskets and baskets not pick up are divided among the county’s food pantries.
2019 is our 40th anniversary of the first food drive. 300 families were provided sandwiches. We have grown to over 2500 families and now offer a full, Thanksgiving meal with turkey, fresh vegetables and fruit, canned vegetables and fruit, stuffing and many other foods associated with the Thanksgiving meal.
