Pancreatic Cancer Research Fundraiser

            The 1.2-mile wheelchair accessible, child, stroller, and pet-friendly event will include a pick-a-prize auction; a 50/50 raffle; a pet parade; free water, donuts, coffee, tea, and apple cider; a pancreatic cancer information area; purple hair extensions by Shear Simplicity; 10-minute chair massages; entertainment by The Puppet People; and live music by Code Blue. The first 500 walkers will receive a free walk-t-shirt and a goody bag.

This year our Walk will celebrate the milestone of having raised a cumulative total exceeding $1,000,000 for the Lustgarten Foundation, America’s largest private foundation dedicated to funding pancreatic cancer research.

• Based in Woodbury, N.Y., the Foundation supports research to find a cure for pancreatic cancer, facilitates dialogue within the medical and scientific community, and educates the public about the disease through awareness campaigns and fundraising events.
• Since its inception, the Lustgarten Foundation has directed $154 million to research and assembled the best scientific minds with the hope that one day, a cure can be found.

The World Inside Your Head

Rensselaer Esplanade

Charles Moore, Dir. of Planning and Development

            The City of Rensselaer alongside local and state officials, opened its new public esplanade, a $3 million-plus public works project made possible through funding from the New York State Department of State. The ceremony to mark the completion of the project.

The waterfront offers a scenic atmosphere for recreation, dining, and much more. The new 1.5 acre park and 1,000 linear ft. riverfront park will offer green space, a bike path, and potential for outdoor events or concerts. Funding was made possible through the New York State Department of State.

            The Building Department administers the building and zoning codes through issuance of permits, conducting inspections, and issuance of violation letters and tickets.

The Planning Department administers applications to the public board and environmental review process required of most development or redevelopment in the city.  Applicants for site plans, subdivision plats, special permits, certificates of appropriateness, and variances present their proposals or requests through this office for approval by the Planning Commission or Zoning Board of Appeals, whose members are city residents appointed by the Mayor.

The Planning Department also administers a variety of state and federal grants and the HOME and CDBG Program, which provides income-based grants for home rehabilitation under the Federal Housing & Urban Development Agency (HUD).

The City of Rensselaer has established Building Permit, Certificate of Compliance (businesses), Certificate of Occupancy (rented residential), Rental Dwelling Registry, Site Plan Review, Subdivision, Stormwater Management, and Zoning requirements for all properties within its borders.

Toys for Tots

GySgt Vinny Roman, Capital Region Coordinator

            The train travels from Binghamton to Delanson on Saturday and then on Sunday, it travels the opposite way from Albany to Rouses Point. We distribute coats, hats, blankets, mittens at every stop. We also have Dunkin Donuts there at every stop handing out munchkins and hot chocolates to the families on the platform. We give out stocking stuffers to all the little kids waiting and also Friehofer’s cookies. We have our special guests of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus there to welcome all the families as well. The mission of the train is to distribute toys to the non-for-profits that are not in our local distribution areas and help bring Christmas to these families.
