The Legal Corner – Updates in the Law

Women’s Symposium

            A Community Symposium and Open Forum Conversation about Poverty, Housing and Current Community Projects – FeaturingBrenda Ann Kenneally 

            The epidemic of insecure housing and the lack of affordable housing fuels systemic, generational poverty (it is not a subtle by-product of poverty.) Without safe, decent housing individuals and their families are deprived of their basic needs and the ability to thrive. Various sources confirm that the ongoing cycle of housing insecurity and ultimately the loss of a housing results in the continuation of losses; the loss of personal belongings, financial hardship, disruption in children’s education,  negative health outcomes, the loss of employment, and potentially leads to substandard housing in impoverished neighborhoods or worse homelessness.           

            Includes a Keynote photographic presentation by Brenda Kenneally, a panel discussion with families faced with the challenges of substandard housing and poverty, round table discussion with community leaders regarding local initiatives addressing the need for affordable, safe housing.

• Mission: Founded in 1993, Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County, Inc. is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat is a globally recognized nonprofit, ecumenical, Christian housing organization that serves Schenectady County. The organization is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.

Segment THREE

Get Ready! Girl Scout Camping

            Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York (GSNENY) Summer Camp (open to all girls, ages 5 -17) is one of the only places where girls can be outside, be creative, and participate in an all-girls community setting.  GSNENY is committed to providing opportunities for girls to choose their own outdoor adventure, learn new skills, build self-confidence, and expand their appreciation of the outdoors and the diversity of others. 

            Day camps (such as Camp Is-Sho-Da, East Greenbush; Camp Meadowbrook, Queensbury; Camp Woodhaven, Galway) are where girls can try new things, challenge themselves and gain confidence as they sing songs, play games, make arts & crafts, and earn badges. Many camps include activities like archery, team building, and waterfront time.

            Overnight/resident camps (such as Hidden Lake, near Lake George and Lake Clear Camp, on Lake Clear) offers a wide variety of activities including waterfront time, archery, arts and crafts, hiking, team-building activities, and ropes course elements.
