Inspired by the timeless story of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story takes Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, and places them in the vibrant battleground of New York City’s West Side in the 1950’s. With soaring, sophisticated, and diverse melodies, energetic and athletic dance battles, and its remarkably salient social message, West Side Story remains one of American musical theatre’s most revolutionary and most loved treasures.
West Side Story is our annual youth production, cast with the very best high school talent from the entire capital district.

Science Festival at miSci

Science Festival of the Capital Region is a week-long celebration of STEAM (science, technology, engineering and math), with wall-to-wall hands-on activities throughout the museum and in the festival tent!  See exciting stage performances featuring live reptiles, video game puppetry, and a high-tech comedy show by AudioBody. Plus, explore miSci’s interactive exhibits, see a Planetarium Show, or fly a simulated space mission in the Challenger Learning Center. Enjoy Festival Expo Days all weekend, Astronomy Day on Saturday and a special STEM Summit for Educators on Wednesday evening. Explore nanotechnology, robotics, natural sciences, chemistry, astronomy, and more from more than 60 participating partners.

Tuesday: District 9 Movie night and panel discussion at GE Theater at Proctors

Wednesday:

• STEM Summit for Educators (evening) – a professional development workshop for educators, featuring various workshops by several different presenters. PD Credits awarded for successful completion.

• “Hot Topics in STEM” Forum
  • Technology: Going Where No One Has Gone Before (12:30 – 1:30 PM)
    • Looking at our current technology – such as virtual and augmented Reality, self-driving cars, additive manufacturing – as well as how technology will evolve in the future. Is there anything left to invent? What will the home of the future look like?
  • According to Who?!: Ethics in Science (2:00 – 3:00 PM)
    • How and when is scientific knowledge shared with the public? When should the public be concerned about bias due to funding? When does science go too far? This panel looks at the practice of science as well as ethically controversial practices such as manipulating the human genome. What is synthetic biology? What is CRISPR? How has it been used already (e.g. to cure heart conditions such as HCM)? Who gets to decide what should be “corrected”? What are some stereotypes or controversial misconceptions about exploratory science?
  • What on Earth?: Extreme Weather, Wasted Food, and the Renewable Revolution (3:30 – 4:30 PM)
    • This panel will look broadly at sustainability. Topics can include, but are not limited to, the impact of climate change on extreme weather and what we can expect for the future. How food is wasted, how consumers are taught to waste food (only buy food which looks or feels are certain way), food expiration dates, and current efforts to change food wasting habits. Other topics of interest include water quality – such as PFOA contamination‒ and conservation, and renewable energy efforts and technology.

Tellabration – Story Circle

Kate Dudding, Storyteller

            Challenges cause some people to rise to the occasion. Come hear stories of what happened when people responded to challenges, told by Kate Dudding, Margaret French,   Marni Gillard,   Christie Keegan,   Bonnie Mion, Claire Nolan,   Nancy Marie Payne and Sandy Schuman. Our emcee is Karen Pillsworth, storyteller laureate of Kingston, NY.

This is our 22^nd annual Tellabration.  Proceeds from our previous Tellabration programs have funded 100 storytelling events at libraries, museums and other locations in the Capital District.

• Mission: At every Story Circle show, superb performers tell rarely heard contemporary and traditional stories celebrating the human spirit. You will find that these shows are shared experiences between the audience and the performer, combining the intensity of a solo performance with the intimacy of a face-to-face conversation.

Concerned for the Hungry – Annual Event

Schedule:

• Saturday, November 11^th 10 – until done – Receive and count Boy Scout Donations
• Wednesday, November 15^th: 4pm – done – Box night creation of boxes to hold food
• Thursday, November 16^th:   10 am – 5pm — Set up floor, receive donations and purchased food.
• Friday, November 17^th:   10 – done   Sort food into appropriate sections
• Saturday, November 18^th:  10 – until done — Pack baskets and prepare for pick up and distribution.
• Sunday, November 19^th:  9 am – 6 pm: Clients pick up food baskets.
• Monday, November 20^th:  Agencies pick up baskets for their clients, homebound baskets delivered and cleanup.

 

• Organization: Concerned for the Hungry
• Mission: Concerned for the Hungry, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax exempt, non-profit organization working to fight hunger in Schenectady County. The organization is run strictly through volunteer efforts. CFH was started by a small group of individuals in 1979. It began with the realization that the need for emergency food was growing. After 38 years, CFH remains a leading force in providing essential food service programs throughout the county.

The Nellie Bly Award – Museum of Political Corruption

            The Nellie Bly Award event honoring Susanne Craig of The New York Times will be on Nov. 16th at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany, 405 Washington Ave. (adjacent to the downtown SUNY campus). The reception will start at 6 PM, with an award ceremony at 6:45. The roundtable discussion on government and the media will begin at 7 and will feature Susanne Craig and William K. Rashbaum of the New York Times, Rex Smith of the Times Union, and John Caher, Senior Advisor for Strategic Communications with the New York State Unified Court System. The panel will be moderated by Capital Pressroom host Susan Arbetter.

About Susanne Craig: Susanne Craig is a reporter in the investigations unit at The New York Times. She writes about the intersection of government, politics and money. She previously served as the paper’s Albany bureau chief and currently writes about President Donald Trump’s finances and business interests She is perhaps best known as the journalist who received portions of his 1995 tax returns in her mailbox during the 2016 U.S. election campaign.
