January 15, 2019 – Show #1067

Segment ONE

theREP’s Red Maple
Margaret E. Hall, Director
Yvonne Perry “Karen” & Oliver Wadsworth “John Hartley”

A new world premiere comedy by Albany playwright David Bunce. Everyone wants to know, “What’s the matter with Robert?” Since becoming an empty-nester, the usually solid and dependable professor seems to be falling apart — just like the old red maple tree in the back yard. When friends get together for a cheer-him-up dinner, Robert announces he’s had an epiphany that will rock the world of the stalwart suburban gang around the table. Things get shaken and stirred as the cocktails and confessions flow, building to a hilarious crescendo when an unexpected guest shows up begging another question, “Guess who’s coming to dinner?” Written by Capital Region veteran actor-writer, David Bunce, this uproarious comedy, set in the suburbs of Albany, was the runaway hit of the 2016 NEXT ACT! Segment FIVE

Fences at Siena College
Jean-Remy Monnay, Director
Emmett Ferris, Actor

Fences, by August Wilson, takes place in 1957 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The play follows Troy Maxson, a 53-year-old man who struggles to provide for his wife and son in a time when slavery is over but the civil rights movement has still not come to fruition. Troy used to be an amazing baseball player, but was not able to make it to the Major Leagues due to the color of his skin. Troy has had to settle into the life of being a trash collector and barely scraping by, and this causes a lot of turmoil and frustration, especially in his relationships. Wilson’s play deals with dreams deferred and what it means to be a man, as well as covering themes of family and loyalty. Most notably, we see a marriage that looks loving and successful at the outset begin to fall apart as Troy’s lack of self-respect starts to crumble everything around him.
