A Murder is Announced!

Miss Marple, Agatha Christie’s great detective, is on the case in the Circle Theater Players production of “A Murder is Announced”. She must put all her powers of observation and deduction to work in outing the dangerous criminal who posted a public notice of when and where the crime will be committed. The suspects are many and some in true Christie fashion turn out to be not who they claim to be. Of course, as in all of Christie’s plays there are twists and turns and dead ends with her almost patented surprise ending

Regional work includes – THE ROYALE (Merrimack Rep), TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (Alliance Theatre Co.), HAMLET, AS YOU LIKE IT (Colorado Shakespeare), COMING HOME (Berkeley Rep). TV credits include – LUKE CAGE, HAND OF GOD, HEARTBEAT, CRIMINAL MINDS and ROSEWOOD.

               JEORGE BENNETT WATSON (WYNTON) Jeorge is very grateful to make his Capital Repertory Theater debut. Recently, Mr. Watson made his Off-Broadway debut in Rose Courtney’s adaptation of “BABETTE’S FEAST,” (Theater at St. Clements, NYC), directed by Karin Coonrod, as Player4; originating the role at Portland Stage Company earlier this year. QUILTS Schenectady!

Q.U.I.L.T.S. is a non-profit organization which encourages members to make and donate quilts in additional to personal care items and  other necessities to local civic organizations serving those in need such as the Northern Rivers Family Services and the Veterans at the VA Hospital

Quilters United In Learning Together of Schenectady (Q.U.I.L.T.S.) is hosting its 16th biennial quilt show.  Hundreds of beautiful quilts made by members will be on display. In addition, there will be vendors, a raffle quilt, a featured quilter, demonstrations, charity quilt displays, quilts for sale, a members’ boutique, and door prizes.  Partial proceeds will benefit Northern Rivers Family Services.

• Mission: Quilters United in Learning Together, Schenectady (Q.U.I.L.T.S.) is a group of avid quilters who enjoy the design, color, artistry and craft of making quilts. The Guild was formed in 1980 and has over 100 active members living in Schenectady, Saratoga, Albany and surrounding communities.

National Ballroom Dance Week!

This is our way to bring ballroom dancing to the community and we have done this for about 20 years! It is wonderful to see the shoppers stop and smile and so often they come up to thank us. We have several amateur and “pro-am” couples dancing! We have some line dancing too! Anita does a great job organizing this and Gary puts all of the music together. During the intermission we ask everyone to get up and dance!

Jajja’s Kids (Uganda)

Jajja’s Kids will hold its 7^th annual fall fundraiser on Sunday September 23, at Revolution Hall, Troy NY from 2 to 6 pm.    Ronnie Sseruyange, program director in Uganda, will be present to share stories of the children at Jajja’s Kids home, and their dreams for the future.  He will also lead guests in African drumming and dancing.  Paul Grondahl, prizewinning journalist, author, and director of the New York State Writers Institute will be honored for his humanitarian and cultural awareness and contributions to our community. The afternoon will include artwork created by Jajja’s Kids and African crafts as for sale, as well as a live auction led by celebrity auctioneer LeGrande Serras.  A buffet lunch is also included in the ticket.  Tickets are available at JajjasKids.org.

• Organization: Jajja’s Kids Inc.
• Mission: Jajja’s Kids works to help impoverished Ugandan children create possibilities for their future by providing a caring home as well as education and leadership opportunities.  We support 19 children who live together in a home and attend school regularly.  These children, ages 9 to 19, were orphans or came from families too poor to care for them.  They now thrive, lovingly cared for by a staff of six.  We work to help these very special and worthwhile children become productive members of their society while avoiding the life they came from, the life of a street child.  Diane Reiner of Latham, NY and Ronnie Sseruyange of Kampala, Uganda founded the organization.  Diane and Ronnie met twelve years ago and bonded over the desire to help street children avoid the challenges that Ronnie, himself a street child for 10 years, had experienced.  Their projects started small and grew to the rented home and community program we have today.  Our goal is to acquire a permanent home in the coming year, so that our children may continue to be secure while they successfully pursue education and career development options.  Jajja’s Kids is a nonprofit in the U.S. working in partnership with an NGO (non-governmental organization) in Uganda

Women’s Employment & Resource Center

This year marks the 30th Pearl Anniversary of WERC, formerly known as the Albany Displaced Homemaker Center.  The symbol for a 30th Anniversary is a pearl which signifies transformation and potential.  It begins as a grain of sand and is cultivated into something of great worth and beauty.  A Pearl also symbolizes wisdom acquired through experience as well as generosity, integrity, and loyalty. At this year’s 30th Anniversary Awards Celebration, on October 2, 2018 at the Hilton Garden Inn Troy, WERC will recognize 30 Pearls of WERC Awardees along with two Pearls of Distinction for their contributions that have ensured WERC’s ongoing success.  This year’s EMCEE will be Heather Thomson, former cast member of the hit Bravo reality series, The Real Housewives of New York City, inventor, entrepreneur, speaker, athlete, licensed health and wellness coach, and avid adventurer. • Organization: Capital District Women’s Employment & Resource Center (WERC)
• Mission: WERC is a not-for-profit organization that works to advance women’s success in the workplace by building their economic and personal independence.
•             Since 1988, WERC has provided quality workforce development services to more than 8,000 women from the New York State Capital Region who have lost their source of income due to the death, divorce, separation, disability, or dislocation of a spouse or who are single mothers.

•             Each year over 300 program participants receive more than 2,700 FREE services including career readiness and computer training, job search and placement assistance, and ongoing supportive services until they find employment.
•             WERC has a proven track record of assisting women in the Capital Region, by improving their economic opportunities and providing excellence in workforce development.
