Low Vision Technology Fairs

Cheryl Lawyer, Outreach & Community Education with Clive

This year’s focus is to raise awareness about diabetes prevention. The purpose of a Low Vision Technology Fair is to showcase the latest in technologies designed to assist people with low vision and vision impairment with reading and daily activities. Low vision technology and vision related companies will be showcasing state-of-the-art products that help with reading and everyday tasks. NABA technology and rehabilitation staff will be on hand to answer questions. Other related organizations will be available to provide service information including the American Diabetes Association, Lions Clubs, NYS Talking Book & Braille Library, WMHT RISE Radio, the NYS Commission for the Blind, CDTA, Stratton V.A. Medical Center, ShopRite, local eye care professionals, service dog information and more. The Lions Hearing Conservation Society will be on hand to provide information about hearing screenings, hearing aids and device loaner program as well as other related resources. And on October 15^th a recognition of National White Cane Awareness Day will be made. Guest speakers 10am certified diabetes educators Nancy Toleno and Judy Carr respectively; ophthalmologists at 1pm Dr. David Perlmutter and Dr. Erica Archer respectively.

The Madwoman of Chaillot!

Lucy Breyer “Countess Aurelia” & Fred Sirois “Rag Picker”

The story takes place in Paris, “a little before noon in the spring of next year”. Act 1 is set in a sidewalk café where the waitress, assorted customers, a ragman, a street musician, a juggler, a deaf child and peddlers mingle with a Corporation President, a Baron, a prospector and a broker. The business people are intent on bombing the office of the City Planner and drilling for oil throughout Paris.  Act 2 takes place in the ancient cellar of Countess Aurelia-the Madwoman. She gathers her friends together for tea and a mock trial to save Paris from destruction. Her first step is to ask the sewer man for the secret of the moving stone.

After the Darkness: by Joe Starzyk

A female reporter, Madison Felton is doing a story on convicted child killer, Ronald Daber. In an effort to learn about both sides of the story, she not only goes to prison to interview Daber, but she also interviews the mother of the boy who was murdered. During her interviews she finds that the more fascinating character is actually the grieving mother who is trying to find a way to move forward. Even though Madison stares into the face of pure evil, she learns that the real power she encounters is that of forgiveness.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

We are promoting October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and some of the events we have going on for the month. October 2-31 is our annual Purple Purse Challenge, which helps raise awareness about financial abuse as a part of domestic violence. It’s a month-long fundraising campaign through Crowdrise. October 15-19 is the ‘Week Without Violence’, during which we have several events, including our annual Take Back the Night March on October 18. The rally and short march will begin and end at the front steps of our main building at 44 Washington Avenue in the Stockade. On Monday, October 22, YWCA NENY will be presenting Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” in the GE Theatre at Proctors. The show, hosted by Subrina Dhammi and featuring many familiar faces from the Capital Region, will begin at 7PM, however the pre-show fun will begin at 6PM.

Schenectady Symphony Orchestra

The Board has invited Chuck back to conduct the opening concert of the 85^th Season which will take place on the Mainstage at Proctors Theater at 3:00 PM on October 21^nd, 2018.  “This will be our Bernstein Tribute concert which will include many of the pieces that Chuck personally selected due to his long time association with Leonard Bernstein”, Bour said.  It will also include, as the Schenectady Symphony is known for, many local ties.  Local composer and Skidmore College faculty member Evan Mack’s “If Only Lenny Were Here” will get its world orchestral premiere with guest Soloist Michael Miller.  Also on the program is Sylvia Stoner-Hawkins, Artist-in-Residence at Skidmore who along with Miller will perform selections from Candide and Trouble in Tahiti, two of Bernstein’s most popular compositions.

The concert will conclude with “Westside Story Symphonic Dances”, the piece as Chuck has said, “I’ve conducted more than any other in my career”.  Joining Schneider and the orchestra on stage will be Debbie’s Dancers from the Orlando School of Dance, under the artistic direction of Debra Pigliavento.  “Orlando has been a dance institution in Schenectady since 1954 and the group has performed with the Symphony before”, according to Bour.  Debbie has agreed to specially choreograph the piece as she did several years ago for the Symphony’s performance of Schneider’s Bosnian Dances

Music Director Charles Schneider celebrates his 35^th anniversary with the Schenectady Symphony. A native of Albert Lea, Minnesota, his extensive credits include conducting the American premiere of Weill’s Mahogany with the San Francisco Opera, Bernstein’s West Side Story at Lincoln Center and the Glasnost Ballet on tour.  European credits include the National Orchestra of Holland and the National Orchestra of Bulgaria.  Maestro Schneider co-founded the Catskill Conservatory and has served on the music faculties of the State University College at Oneonta, Hartwick College (where he received an honorary doctorate degree), Colgate University, Hamilton College and the San Diego State University.

As founding Music Director of Glimmerglass Opera, Mr. Schneider received international acclaim during his twelve year stint.  In addition to the Schenectady Symphony, he is also the Music Director of the Catskill Symphony Orchestra.  Schneider was appointed Music Director of the Portland Chamber Orchestra in September of 1993

The Blacksmith
